The Greater Sudbury Police Service is beginning a one year pilot project that will see cameras installed in four cruisers.

The system has a forward facing camera to record what is happening in front of the cruiser and a camera mounted to record the rear seat.

Deputy Police Chief Al Lekun says this will be a powerful tool in court when investigating incidents like failing to stop at a red light or stop sign as well as impaired driving.

Deputy Chief Lekun says the cameras should also improve officer and community safety.

The cameras will go into two traffic and two downtown patrol vehicles.

The price tag for the cameras and software is $40,500 with the cost of maintenance, management and data storage to be monitored during the pilot project.
