Daly: If someone has never heard of We Were Sharks before can you describe a live show to them?

WWS: A lot of fun but a lot of guys looking like they kind of hate each other a little bit

Daly: Oh, why’s that?

WWS: So…we played Timmins a couple weeks ago now actually. And I tried to drop kick our singer off the barricade

Daly: Wow, I missed that.

WWS: Yeah, that’s our live show summed up there

Daly: So you go out to see how much how much damage you can cause each night?

WWS: I want to get as close as I can to hurting each other but like not actually hurt each other. A few weeks ago Steve smacked me in the face. Like stopped playing…and smacked me in the face.

Daly: Just out of nowhere, no reason behind it?

WWS: Absolutely none.

Daly: We Were Sharks has been playing since about 2010, you have your new release, Not A Chance¸out now on Panic State Records & it sounds great. Being in a band that’s done the DIY scene so much what’s it like now having Panic State on board to help out?

WWS: It’s cool. It’s neat having a little bit of support especially from the American side of things. Because the size of the label their kind of go to thing is still fairly DIY on their end as well. But there’s still that extra support, it’s nice not to have to go in there completely alone.

Daly: Are they based out of the States?

WWS: They’re essentially out of New Jersey, they’ve got a lot of bands in that area and a lot of respect going down in that scene so it’s kind of cool.

Daly: So much of the music industry is networking so it must be nice to have that base in there right?

WWS: Ya, it’s cool. We were supposed to play – they had like a big showcase in the winter – we we’re going to go down and they dropped the biggest snowstorm that they’ve ever had in New Jersey and it kind of got cancelled.

But a couple of the guys went down and checked it out and the music scene there, everybody there was really supportive even of us just coming to check out the show and us being Canadians they were just really welcoming to us. It was really cool. Some scenes will get kind of cliquey and they get outsiders and you know, some people won’t support it just because you’re an outsider.

Daly: Did you guys enjoy your show at Heart Of Gold Fest?

WWS: Oh my god, we had the best time. Absolutely. It was super cool to play up there, we’ve all played up there in different bands -I don’t think we’ve played there as We Were Sharks so it was really cool to play there, especially as part of a festival like that.

Daly: Can we expect you to venture north of the Capital anytime soon?

WWS: Ya we’re actually setting up a weekend that we’re doing, that’s just Northern Ontario. So Sudbury, North Bay and Timmins, should be mid to late July. We’re still waiting on a couple things to get back but we’ll be up there in July for sure.

Daly: I read that you guys are trying to book a tour through the States right now. Is it challenging to get promoters and everything on board for a Canadian band to break into America?

WWS: It comes with its challenges I mean especially with a Canadian band trying to get into the States strictly paperwork-wise it can be difficult. We’re working with a few people in the States that have truly helped us grasp the idea of getting down there and setting up shows and setting us up with bands that we can connect with and you know, kind of make a real run to break into the States the best we can. We did have some paperwork issues. We were supposed to go there next month actually and we had some issues with homeland security and couldn’t go. Now we’re going in August for a few weeks and it should be a really good time.

Daly: Paperwork would drive me nuts in a situation like that; such a small thing can stop you from doing a tour.

WWS: It’s really funny to try to get like 6 dudes who haven’t really done paperwork in a really really long time to sit down and have to fill out like twenty pieces of paper. Like everyone was calling their parents, “Hey do you guys know my social security number? I really need it!”.

Daly: Almost like your back in school, “What did you put down here. What did you put down there?”

WWS: I had to refill out one of my paperwork because they asked for my birthdate and I filled in my phone number. When we went back to redo it the people at the office were making fun of me for it, but it was pretty funny. Yah I don’t think a lot of us have picked up a pen in a really long time.
