Greater Sudbury was the only major city in Northern Ontario to see population growth according to Statistics Canada’s five year census data.

It was a slight increase as Sudbury’s population for 2016 was at 161,531 up 0.8 per cent from 2011 when it sat at 160,274.

North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay and Timmins all saw decreases in population as much as 3.9 per cent.

Canada’s population on census day was 35,151,728.

Ontario grew a bit but lagged behind the national rate for the first time in two straight census periods since World War II.
