Sure we enjoyed a mild start to winter, but that has consequences.  Work on the Ramsey Lake Skate Path is a bit behind schedule because the ice isn’t thick enough to get equipment on there. I talked with James St. John, the superintendent of horticulture for the City of Greater Sudbury, and he said there’s about three inches of ice on Ramsey Lake right now, with about four inches of slush.  That’s not enough to being out the heavy machinery needed to start clearing the path.  They need at least 12-15 inches.  The hope is they will be able to get small machinery on the lake after this weekend with some good ice-making temperatures.  James says the skate path attracted a lot of winter tourism to our city, and many out-of-towners took time to write and thank the city for such a beautiful attraction. The skate path has historically opened anywhere from mid January to early February, and closes in March when conditions are no longer safe or favourable. I guess we just have to be patient!
