Evolutionary, from Confederation Secondary School in Val Caron, is going to the Junos this Sunday in Hamilton.

The school band’s Music Director, Teacher Norm McIntosh was invited as the Juno Awards celebrate ten years of the “Teacher of the Year” award.

McIntosh was the first recipient, in 2005.

He declined the invite to the award show at first, due to family commitment near Ottawa.

Then he changed his mind, believing he could make the two events work in his schedule.

He contacted the organizers behind the Junos to say he would attend, but on one condition -that his 35-member school band be allowed to go too.

The awards show agreed and gave him extra tickets for Evolutionary.

McIntosh says telling the students was memorable since the news came as a complete shock to them.

Some of the teens shouted in glee, while others cried with joy and excitement.

McIntosh says this is a great way to start Evolutionary’s 35th anniversary year.

The band opens its new season this Friday at Confederation, when 600 students from other schools come for the first concert.
