The City has narrowed its submission to one…for the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

Four projects were up for consideration for the federal grant, but when city council learned that Sudbury may only receive between 50 and 100 thousand dollars, they changed their submission to the construction of the Courtyard at Tom Davies Square.

The others up for consideration were a new ski lift at Adanac Ski Hill, regreening of the parking lot at the former St. Joseph’s hospital, and expansion of existing neighbourhood parks to include splash pads.

At first Ward 5 Councillor Robert Kirwan was skeptical about approving that idea, because if approved the project would have to be completed by 2017.

The city narrowed to the courtyard thanks to a suggestion by Ward 10 Councillor Fern Cormier becuase they felt the courtyard was a needed upgrade and had to be complete by 2016.

Ward 12 Councillor, Joscelyne Landry-Altmann sweetened the submission by saying if approved the funds would be used for a Canada 150 piece of art.

If approved, the grant that will help celebrate the nations 150th birthday, will go towards four million dollars of construction to the downtown courtyard.

The Federal program is to support projects that will rehabilitate existing community facilities across Canada, and ensure a lasting legacy resulting from Canada 150.
