What is Alternative Care?

Alternative Care is approved homes that offer short- or long-term care for children who need safety, guidance, and nurturing. It is always the goal of Nogdawindamin Family and Community Services for children to be reunified with their families, however when families need extra supports, we count on our Alterative Care families.   Our Culturally based team offers many supports and training opportunities, to ensure that children are connected to the community and culture.

Who are AC Parents?

In Anishnawbek tradition, it has been the duty of Aunties, Uncles, Grandparents, Sisters and Brothers to assist in caregiving. With the demands of modern lifestyles this role has broadened to include other Community members and non-Indigenous families.

What is the service?

Our service begins with families and community-members wanting to support children and youth. The home study process includes sharing of information to help us get to know each other better. Once these conversations are completed, the assessment is brought to a committee for approval. Successful candidates will be assigned an Alternative Care Worker to support them throughout their caregiving journey.

What are some key details about the Alternative Care Program:

Our service delivery model is child-focused, family-centered, Community-driven and Culturally based.

We pride ourselves on being different and welcome diversity. We accept that people change and grow and that each individual has a unique gift to offer.

How does your service work?

Caregivers can choose to provide emergency, respite, short or long-term care. The Worker will support the family in matching a child or youth that will be a welcomed member of their home. Alternative Caregivers are continuously supported throughout their journey.

Why is Community Involvement Important?

One of our most precious resources are Alternative Care Homes.  We know it takes a community to raise a child, and we need our communities to step up and make the decision to become an Alternative Care Parent today.
