If your house is like mine, you are spending more time in the kitchen these days.  I find myself going for my recipe book and pulling out favourites from when I was a kid…my Mom’s Meatball Soup and Tuna Puffs.  So Chris and I called our favourite foodie, a Food Sport Competitor, Home Cook, winner of the very first episode of Wall of Chefs, former announcer right here at 92.7 Rock, and friend of the show, Chris Mask, our Feel Good Friday Foodie!

I was intrigued about making my own yeast so Chris mask sent us the instructions.  Good recipe to have on hand in case there are issues getting ingredients for your favourite things to bake.

Here are a couple ways to make yeast at home from scratch…

Basic:

2 Cups of flour

2 Cups of non-chlorinated water (bottled water generally perfect or try spring water)

Combine flour & water in a medium bowl & stir well. Cover loosely with a cloth & let rest on a kitchen counter for 2 – 3 days (or until bubbly).

To use & feed your “starter”…take out the amount needed for your recipe & then replace that amount with equal parts flour & non-chlorinated water. If you keep your “starter” at room temperature it should be fed every other day, & if refrigerated, fed weekly. In the event you accumulate more starter than you need, just toss out a cup or two & keep feeding it or gift it to somebody else.

Potato Method:

You can also make yeast from potatoes by boiling & mashing a potato.

Next add sugar to the mashed potato & potato water. This was the way yeast for vodka was traditionally made & produces a slightly different flavour vs traditional yeast. Plus you can get into moonshine making….or so I am, uh….told.

3 potatoes to 4 Cups of water is a good ratio. Again you need to let it rest to become a “starter” & also feed it.
