Sudbury Police are calling the incident at the parking lot of Michael’s in Greater Sudbury a vicious attack between people who did not know each other.

Officers say a 35-year old woman was stabbed in the neck and remains in hospital in critical condition.

Her nine month old child suffered multiple bruises after being stuck by the suspect while the knife was still in his hands.

A community member was able to get the knife free but not before the man hurt himself.

Police arrived on the scene and arrested 25-year old Alexander Stavropoulos who has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and two other charges.

Stavropoulos was shot by Greater Sudbury Police officers at the Downtown Transit Terminal in April 2018 after charging at them with knives in each hand.

He was released in August on time served.
