Thousands of people are expected at Science North to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday on Saturday, July 1st. But if thousands of people take cars, it will be a disaster! Sudbury Transit has a $1 transit service. Canada Day Celebration shuttle services will be available every 30 minutes on Saturday and will take residents from both downtown or the Southridge Mall to Science North for one dollar per person. The final bus will depart from Science North at 11:15 pm.

And this from the Greater Sudbury Police Service:
The Greater Sudbury Police Service Traffic Management Unit will be on patrol Canada Day regulating the safe flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Roadways around Bell Park, Science North, Health Sciences North and several intersecting streets will be monitored for prohibited parking.

Vehicles parked where prohibited by signs, grassed areas, boulevards, sidewalks or obstructing driveways and intersections will be ticketed and or towed. The boat launch and access roads to the beach areas off Ramsey Lake Road will be monitored to ensure that vehicles are not blocking access routes. The boat launch parking lot is for vehicles arriving with boats and not for general parking.

Access to Health Sciences North for emergency vehicles will monitored and maintained and all prohibited parked vehicles will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

The Greater Sudbury Police Marine Unit will be patrolling Ramsey Lake, checking for boaters that may be consuming alcohol and ensuring boaters do not operate their vessels within the drop zone during the fireworks. Marine officers will also be on shore to ensure that boaters have all the required safety equipment on hand before going on the Lake. Please ensure that you check your equipment before leaving home. Refer to http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/debs-obs-menu-1362.htm for further information.

Sudbury Transit will be providing shuttle rides to and from Science North from the Southridge Mall and the Downtown Bus Depot from 11:45 a.m. until after the Fireworks to bring passengers to Science North. Return trips begin immediately after the fireworks. The cost is $1.00 round trip. This means of transportation is encouraged due to the limited parking available and to discourage prohibited parking. Additional parking is available in the parking lot of the former St. Joseph Health Centre site, and at the corner of Paris and York Streets.

Temporary Road Closures: The following intersections will be closed starting at 10:00pm until after the fireworks;

Paris St. closed at Ramsey Lake Road. Northbound traffic on Paris St. will be directed to take Centennial Drive. Only local traffic on Ramsey Lake Road will be permitted. After the fireworks all traffic from Science North will be directed southbound (left) onto Paris St.
Paris St. closed at Boland Ave. Southbound traffic on Paris St. will be directed westbound (right) onto Boland Ave.
Paris St. closed at York St. Traffic from Ripple St. at York will be directed to Regent St.

Paris St. traffic will not be able to turn onto York St. After the fireworks, all traffic from the York St. parking lots will be directed towards Regent St.

Please ensure that you take your time leaving the Canada Day Celebrations. Be patient and abide by the rules and regulations of the road. The Traffic Management Unit is advising pedestrians to use crosswalks to avoid unnecessary risk to themselves and others. Also consider carpooling and using Sudbury Transit to help alleviate traffic congestion.
