Council Says Yes To Summer Games Final Bid Proposal

City Council has said yes to a bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games.

Concillors voted 8-5 in favour last night which means they’ll have to commit three million dollars and be on the hook if the games incur any deficit.

Money will be provided from sponsors as well as provincial and federal government.

Ward 9 Councillor Deb McIntosh supported the move believes Sudbury can win.

There were some who were for the games but voted against because of the risks.

Ward 5 Councillor Robert Kirwan says as the city has to be careful.

There will be a number of facilities in the city that will need to be upgraded and some councillors believe spending money on those is not right because of the large number of other projects that are higher on the to-do list.

Staff will submit the final bid proposal January 31st and will find out if we’re chosen over Ottawa, Niagara and Kitchener-Waterloo by March 30th.
