It’s technically two words, “democracy sausage” has been named Australia’s word of the year for 2016. A representative for the Australian National Dictionary Center says it qualifies because, as the AP reports, it’s “essentially a compound word.” A democracy sausage is a barbecue beef sandwich sold at polling stations throughout Australia, and it became a symbol of the country’s drawn-out federal election process, which lasted some two months before a winner was declared.
Hmmm…maybe we should try this. It may increase voter turnout. That is, if it’s legal. Ah, who are we kidding. Right/wrong, legal/illegal has no place in politics as we know all too well here in Sudbury.

So, what would Canada’s “Word of the Year” be?
