Drug Drop Off

By: Nick Liard

This Saturday, pharmacies across the country and in Sudbury will offer a safe way for residents to dispose of expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs.

It’s the 4th year Sudbury has taken part in an effort to create a safer community.

A survey says almost 60 per cent of Canadian youth get medication for the purposes of getting high from home.

Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist, Sophie Adam talked about the potential harm that can be caused by keeping around old prescription medicine, saying taking someone else’s medicine can cause different effects or reactions.

Greater Sudbury Police Deputy Chief Al Lekun says when they started four years ago they only had a handful of pharmacies taking part, but that has grown to 35.

Lekun says anyone can bring in drugs at any time but this day raises awareness.

Sudbury is looking to break last year’s one day mark of 75 pounds of drugs.
