The theme for National Volunteer Week is “Volunteers are the root of strong communities.”

This week across the country and here in Sudbury those who dedicate their time to a variety of causes will be celebrated.

Community Initiatives Manager with the United Way, Linda Dupuis says volunteers often go unnoticed, but they are vital to the Canadian economy.

Dupuis says Sudbury ranked in the top ten in number of volunteers per communities in Canada, and in Canada there are over 13 million volunteers in the country which equals to 50 billion dollars in economic value per year.

A volunteer appreciation celebration put on by the Greater Sudbury Police will run tomorrow at 6 pm at Cambrian College.
