In soccer, referees raise a yellow card to caution a player when they’ve made an offensive move.

That’s the premise behind the Yellowcard campaign, which is into its second year in Greater Sudbury.

The initiative aims to eliminate the use of the r-word in everyday vocabulary.

Special Olympics Community Coordinator in Sudbury, Lynn Houle says athletes and others with intellectual disabilities find the word hurtful, degrading and insulting.

The campaign asks people to take the pledge not to use the word.

Inspector Sheila Weber says Greater Sudbury Police recently created a video to go along with the initiative, promoting the pledge and vowing not to use the r-word.

There is also a social media aspect.

Those taking the pledge can use the hashtag #NoGoodWay, which refers to the fact there is no good way to use to r-word.

The campaign has a number of well known Canadians behind it, who have personally taken the pledge.
