An excavator fell through the ice on a tailings pond at Vale’s Creighton Mine in Lively.

Firefighters trained in water rescue were called to rescue the male operator .

Greater Sudbury Fire say the operator ventured further out on the ice than intended and the machine fell through.

No one was hurt.

An investigation may come from the mining company.

Investigators say this is a timely reminder that as the weather warms the thickness of ice becomes unpredictable.

Ice thickness should be checked before venturing out.
